3 Common House Painting Mistakes to Avoid

Posted on

Painting projects are crucial projects that you should give all the necessary attention to if you ever wish to execute them excellently. Whether you're engaging in a DIY painting endeavor or are hiring a professional painter, there are mistakes that you should ensure to keep away from.

Here are three common mistakes that professional and casual painters make in their painting endeavors and how you should avoid them.

1. Painting Under Extreme Temperatures

One important detail about paints is that they never work well under extreme temperatures. First, you need to check the storage condition. Ensure that you store your latex/ acrylic paint inside if the temperatures drop too low if you are in a cold climate area. Freezing temperatures can ruin latex or acrylic paint. Also, ensure you don't paint when the temperatures are extremely low, as paint never dries appropriately in freezing temperatures.

At the other end of the spectrum, hot temperatures will cause the paint to dry before you can spread it fairly. This could lead to the paint bubbling and sloughing off, leading to losses and damages on the wall. If your wall is exposed to direct sunlight, plan to paint it earlier when it's still cool or later in the afternoon when the sun moves to the opposite side.

2. Using a Low-Quality Brush

You're a skilled painter, no doubt about that, but when you pick a low-quality brush, there won't be any difference between your work and that of an amateur. In painting, you should complement your good painting skills with a reliable, high-quality painting brush.

Using high-quality equipment gives you smooth paint surfaces, with no bristles stuck on the wall, and enables you to finish the work faster. Additionally, the paint you're using will determine the kind of brush you should use. Use a natural bristle brush when using oil-based paint, and go for a brush with synthetic bristles when using latex paint.

3. Applying Paint Over Glossy Finishes

When you apply paint on a surface that already has a coat of glossy paint or varnish, the drying process tends to drag. This makes it very difficult to achieve a perfect finish, and you might end up redoing the whole work.

To achieve a perfect look, you should begin by roughing up the surface using sandpaper or using a liquid deglosser to get rid of the glossy finish. This way, your paint will now stick in easily and perfectly to achieve a perfect dry.

Keep these tips in mind for your next interior painting project.
