Painting Board And Batten? How To Do It The Right Way

Posted on

Board and batten are seen in just about every decor style, from farmhouse to boho and everything in between. Board and batten can be done in a number of ways, including in geometric patterns. If you have board and batten in your home, you may wonder how to paint it to give it a cohesive and beautiful look without showing too many gaps. Read on for tips to paint board and batten properly.

Fill In Holes

Any holes in the board and batten, such as nail holes, should be filled in with wood filler. Any imperfections in the wood should also be filled with the wood fill and allowed to dry. Once dry, sand it down to give your wood boards a solid look without all of the extra imperfections that can occur while installing the board and batten on your walls.

Fill In Gaps

Along with the holes in your wood, you will also need to fill in the gaps between the wood and your walls. Fill in the gaps with paintable caulk. Don't use silicone or anything that isn't paintable; you want to give your board and batten a look so you can see the beautiful board and batten and not focus on the gaps. Use the caulk to fill in these gaps, then smooth the area out with your finger. Once the caulk is dry, inspect your work to ensure your board and batten is free of imperfections and gaps.

Paint The Board And Batten

Paint your board and batten with whatever paint you prefer. You can use any type of paint, but be sure you use a paintbrush to apply the paint to the edges of the board and batten. Make sure you catch any drip marks and use a roller to paint the rest of your wall to blend in the paintbrush marks. If you want a different look, you can use two different finishes of paint so the board and batten design can stand out even more, such as using a flat paint on the flat portion, then use a satin or semi-gloss on the wood pieces so they stand out further.

Painting board and batten is a fairly easy task, but you need to do the prep work so it doesn't just look like you stuck a few pieces of wood onto your wall. Take your time to go through the extra steps to give your board and batten a more professional and cohesive look. Hire a paint professional to help you with this task.
