3 Time And Stress Saving Painting Tips

Posted on

Repainting a room--or a whole house--is one of the most commonly undertaken home improvement tasks. And for many people it is also one of the most messy. Fortunately, it is possible to reduce the amount of mess and stress by arming yourself with a few simple tips. This article will present three handy tricks for your next painting project.

Punch holes in the rim of your paint cans.

Paint has a nasty way of accumulating in the depression around the rim of the can while you paint. Hammering the lid into place often sends this paint splattering out in all directions. Not only that, but once the lid is in place, that paint dries and locks it firmly into place. This makes getting it open again much more of a struggle than it should be.

Fortunately, you can avoid both of these unpleasant scenarios by using a hammer and nail to punch a series of holes in the bottom of the rim's groove. This will allow wet paint to drain right back down into the can. Once you have put the lid back on, it will conveniently cover up these holes, thus protecting the paint with an airtight seal.

Hang on to your paintbrush packaging.

When opening up a new paintbrush, many people make the mistake of simply throwing the packaging away. Yet that band of paper or plastic can come in handy when it comes to drying paintbrushes. You see, the bristles on a paintbrush have a tendency to curl and splay outward when drying. Slipping the paintbrush back into its wrapper helps to keep it in the proper shape. A rubber band and a piece of cardstock can be used to fulfill the same purpose, should you have already thrown the packaging away.

Skip the drop cloth in favor of cardboard.

Most everybody knows that, in theory, you should use a drop cloth to protect your floor from unwanted paint splatters. Unfortunately, drop cloths are often much harder to control in practice. Not only can they be difficult to keep in place, but wet paint splatters still often get on the floor thanks to a drop cloth's tendency to become bunched up.

Those who would like an easier way to protect their floors should consider using large pieces of flattened cardboard. For one thing, it is much easier to slide a piece of cardboard into position against a wall. It is also easier to move the cardboard from position to position as your painting progresses. Best of all, dirty or paint splattered cardboard can be thrown away and replaced for virtually no cost at all!
