Buying Paint

Instead of buying several gallons, you should stick with just a quart of paint to see if the color is what you want. Since different places in the room can be lighted up differently, you want to paint a piece of foam board and place it around the room so you can be sure you like each shade. Once you have chosen the right color, you then want to determine how much paint you need. In general, you want to buy about a gallon of paint for every 400 square feet. 

Picking out the Sheen 

Color is not the only thing you need to consider when purchasing paint. You also have the options of eggshell, satin, and gloss when deciding which texture to buy. If you plan to paint an area that sees a lot of traffic, you will want something that is easier to clean. Gloss and satin finishes are much easier to clean than eggshell finish. In fact, there is still a way to get a consistent paint color even by purchasing paint at different times. The key is to combine the gallons when you go to paint.
